INFLUENCE OF SULFUR–CONTAINING FERTILIZERS ON YIELD AND QUALITY OF ONIONS

Abstract

The aim. Study the effect of sulfur–containing fertilizers (elemental sulfur, ammonium sulfate and zinc) on the yield and quality of onion bulbs. Methods. Field, laboratory, computational and statistical. Results. According to the results of research 2017–2019 for the agro–climatic zone of the Left Bank Forest–Steppe of Ukraine, the effectiveness of sulfur–containing fertilizers (in the form of elemental sulfur, ammonium sulfate and zinc) in the cultivation of onion hybrid DaitonF1.The use of sulfur–containing fertilizers and mineral fertilizers in the technology of growing onions helped to create conditions for increasing its yield from 8.2 to 11.7% on the background N60P60K60, and in the case of using ammonium nitrate (N40) this figure has increased to 16.8–25.2 %. The yield of onions was in direct dependence (r = 0.88) on the reserves of mineral nitrogen in the arable soil layer 0–20 cm during the formation of bulbs. A correlation was established between the yield of onions and the content of mobile sulfur in the arable soil layer. Analysis of the linear equation showed a strong direct relationship between the yield of onions and the content of mobile sulfur in the arable soil layer during the formation of bulbs(r = 0.78). The dry matter content increased by 0.28–0.53%, the amount of sugars – by 0.12–0.15 % and the essential oil content – by 1.75–2.60mg/100 g. During seed treatment with ammonium and calcium sulfate, the content of nitrates in the products did not exceed the MPC and was –78.0–79.3mg/kg of crude substance. Conclusions. Presowing treatment of seeds with ammonium sulfate is compatible with the application of mineral fertilizers in the dose N60P60K60 (background) provided a significant increase in the yield of onions by 2.7 t/ha (11.7%) and 2.3 t/ha (10%) compared with the control (without fertilizers, 22.6 t/ha), in the complex with the introduction N60P60K60 (background) and nitrogen fertilization (N40) by 5.7 t/ha (25.2%) and 4.5 t/ha (20.0%), respectively. The increase, which provided only the treatment of seeds was 2.8 t/ha (10.1%) with the use of ammonium sulfate and 1.0 t/ha (4.1%) –zinc sulfate, SSD05 1.51 t/ha. The use of sulfur–containing fertilizers did not adversely affect the content of the components of the chemical composition of onions.
